Yesterday, our media partners at NBC7 San Diego had me on to discuss the story about Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher’s recent hire by the Union-Tribune. Fletcher hired Amy Thoma, who’s best known as a Republican campaign strategist, to serve as a committee consultant in Sacramento. She’ll make $7,084 a month on the state payroll, the Union-Tribune said. Thoma has been, and will continue to, volunteer as key aide on Fletcher’s 2012 San Diego mayoral campaign.
We write about how campaigns fund themselves and pay their expenses so the money used in the race is as transparent as possible. That’s why we do stories about transferring cash from one campaign account to another and establishing lesser-known accounts for donors. But also, as I told NBC, no one should be naïve enough to think that the work done in elected officials’ offices doesn’t directly benefit their next campaign. Here’s the NBC spot, which also features Democratic political strategist Larry Remer.
