It’s that time again.

Local campaigns already are sending out mail to your homes for the 2012 elections. I’d like to see them. Campaign mail often provides important insight into the strategies candidates and interest groups are using. Sometimes the attacks are downright brutal. And we really like to make sure everyone’s being truthful.

Many folks told me they have recently received mail from mayoral candidate Carl DeMaio about the pension reform initiative he’s backing. The mailer asks people to call or email to receive a petition to qualify the initiative for the June 2012 ballot. According to last week’s Union-Tribune, initiative backers still needed 30,000 signatures by Oct. 14.
