Mayor Jerry Sanders and Qualcomm co-founder Irwin Jacobs have unveiled a 10-minute video that they hope will increase public support for their controversial plan to renovate Balboa Park.

The two have proposed removing cars from the park’s central Plaza de Panama and constructing a new bridge and underground parking structure to make it possible. The documentary-style video includes an animated tour of what the park’s redesigned core would look like.

As we’ve documented, the plan has faced stiff resistance led by preservationists who argue that the modern renovations would destroy Balboa Park’s historic character.

The video, which Sanders and Jacobs premiered at a brief press conference in the park Monday, casts the proposed renovation as only the latest of many the park has experienced during the last century.
