In 2004, San Diego Unified School District charged charter schools $440 a student. Today, it’s $888 a student.
That was one of the nuggets from my story a couple of weeks ago about charter schools breaking away from San Diego Unified’s special education program.
This week, I teamed up with NBC 7 San Diego’s Catherine Garcia to break the issue down some more in our latest episode of San Diego Explained.
Garcia and I headed to Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza downtown, where we used the analogy of pizza dough to explain why the district spends much more on special education each year than it gets from the state for that purpose.
We also examined why charter schools are increasingly choosing to “make their own pizza” when it comes to providing students with special education services.
