District 7 is one of the battleground City Council districts in this year’s elections.

The newly configured district is being contested by three main challengers: A Republican, a Democrat and an independent, and voters will have to decide who the best man is to deal with District 7’s problems.

Those issues include fire safety in a district that’s riddled with canyons; development along Mission Gorge Road, just north of Mission Valley, where developers want to build thousands of apartments; and meeting the diverse needs of a largely immigrant population in Linda Vista and Serra Mesa.

I spent a week in District 7 in April, getting to know the neighborhoods and the candidates. Then I teamed up with our media partners NBC 7 San Diego to film a quick video explainer on the race.
