One San Diego Unified school board trustee’s new full-time gig has gotten lots of attention recently.
Trustee Richard Barrera took over last month as secretary-treasurer of the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council, the umbrella organization for the region’s unions.
There were some concerns about potential conflicts of interest but an outside attorney hired by the school district ultimately decided Barrera could remain in his school board post. One of Barrera’s school board colleagues came to his defense in a U-T San Diego story about the attorney’s findings.
School board president John Lee Evans claimed that all school board trustees hold full-time jobs, aiming to emphasize that all must balance their careers with their school board work.
In the latest edition of Fact Check TV, Scott Lewis and I took a closer look at trustees’ day jobs to find out whether Evans’ claim is true.
