Teaching Every Child in San Diego How To Swim
Note: Prevent Drowning Foundation of San Diego was formerly the San Diego Junior Lifeguard Foundation.
About Us
The mission of the Prevent Drowning Foundation of San Diego is to save lives by funding swim lessons for underserved youth and providing aquatic safety education for all.
Prevent Drowning Foundation of San Diego formally known as the San Diego Junior Lifeguard Foundation believes drowning is preventable and it is our vision to teach every child in San Diego how to swim! Since 2009, our purpose has been simple, we do everything we can to prevent drowning and save lives of children by targeting under-served communities that need swim lessons and aquatic water and ocean safety education. With our local school, community and aquatic partners, we have impacted tens of thousands of young people in San Diego County and made their lives safer and more enjoyable.

In addition to teaching kids to swim, the Foundation has two other major priorities. The first is to privately fund and build a state of the art aquatic project that will be the epicenter for aquatic safety in San Diego. It will allow increased SD Junior Lifeguard enrollment and provide a meeting place for all community aquatic partners in San DiegoCounty. The other priority of the Foundation is to continue supporting the 1,400 junior lifeguards and provide annual junior scholarships for underserved children.
Water Proofing San Diego
Our goal is to provide a “waterproofing” approach for the youth of San Diego through aquatic education and drowning prevention programs such as …
Aquatic Safety Education
The Foundation provides free aquatic education in the classroom across San Diego. Primarily focused on third through fifth-grade classrooms. We are also active in presenting aquatic safety lectures to the military.

Learn to Swim 4 Free
The Foundation will provide necessary funding for Learn to Swim programs. We are working with the San Diego County YMCA and the San Diego Unified School District to provide swim lessons to all 3-5 graders in the school district.
First visit to the beach called ‘Bridge to the Beach’
Lifeguards take groups of new pool swimmers to the beach for a day. Many of the participants have never been to the beach before. The activities mirror those provided to youth in the Junior Lifeguard Program and are designed to introduce youth to the ocean environment including recognition of rip currents and other beach safety education.
Public Safety Fairs, Parades & Military “Safety Stand-Down” Events
The Prevent Drowning Foundation of San Diego will provide needed funding to participate in over 35 various parades and special events to educate the public in water safety.
San Diego Junior Lifeguard
The Foundation supports the San Diego Junior Lifeguard Program, which offers youth an opportunity to learn from professional lifeguards. Students gain a wide variety of skills and knowledge including how to enjoy the beach safely, ocean and wave education, area familiarity, first aid and CPR, water rescue techniques, the importance of keeping physically fit; and other topics related to lifeguarding. This valuable experience builds self-confidence and skills for life. Ages 9-17
San Diego Junior Lifeguard – Grommets (ages 7-8)
The Foundation supports this program which provides an introduction to ocean awareness for the younger children. The class will focus on ocean safety, open water swimming techniques, and other ocean activities. J Grommet prepares the participants for what they will expect when they tryout and participate in the C Level Junior Lifeguard Program.
