San Diego officials are keeping a close eye on the land behind the Convention Center.

That area plays a big role in the city’s new vision to expand the Convention Center.

But there’s a problem.

A partnership known as Fifth Avenue Landing LLC currently holds the lease on the land is moving ahead on a plan to build a hotel there.

The city and this partnership are currently in mediation talks and a big deal could be coming to buy the partnership out of the lease. But the price tag for that could go up significantly.

On this week’s San Diego Explained, Voice of San Diego’s Scott Lewis and NBC 7’s Monica Dean break down the heated debate behind Fifth Avenue Landing.
