Since the governor signed a bill that prevents school districts from forcing teachers to tell parents if a student changes their gender, name or pronouns, there’s been a lot of confusion about what the law does and doesn’t do.
The new law: The SAFETY ACT prohibits school districts from passing policies requiring teachers to inform parents if a student is transgender. But it doesn’t forbid teachers from making their own decisions about when sharing a students’ gender identity with parents is necessary.
But how does that work? Voice of San Diego’s Deborah Brennan spoke to the bill’s author, Assemblymember Chris Ward, about how he interprets teachers’ responsibilities.
She also explains what we know about how the law could impact several lawsuits.
In other Capitol news: Brennan also explains in the latest Sacramento Report why Gov. Newsom is turning up the heat on counties to implement a new law that makes it easier to compel people with mental illness or substance addiction into treatment.
