As we read about Mike Aguirre’s supposed failings in the courtroom last week, let us not ignore the bigger picture. The BIA lawsuit is yet another attempt to ensure that developers profit as low-income San Diegans struggle. We’ve had unbridled condo conversions, record re-development, and nothing of any substance provided by those who have reaped the greatest benefit. The council should be out in force decrying the judge’s decision – but they’re not. Why not?

As for the $175 million – did the council members ever reject a possible settlement and that is why it has gone to court? The bigger picture is that the actions of council and city officials resulted in the underfunding of the pension system, and now the taxpayers have to pay. It was not Mike Aguirre who served as city attorney in 2002, it was Casey Gwinn.

Strange how his name is suddenly never mentioned in all of this. Wasn’t Rocky De La Fuente also on Casey’s watch?
