City council approves a $3 billion budget. I compared the mayor’s 2007 budget to the City Manager’s 2006 budget. You can do this by asking the City Clerk to show you both documents. 2006 is about 2300 pages. 2007 is about 500 pages, or 80 percent less than 2006. That means the council got 80 percent less information.

So, to analyze 80 percent less information, the council hired a six person budget-analysis staff. This is a new addition. With all the extra staff, shouldn’t we get more information, rather than 80 percent less?

But you don’t see the council complaining. Less work for staff, less work for city council. But six more people on the payroll.
