Monday, July 3, 2006 | May I propose one very simple, long-overdue baby step toward lowering the outrageous retirement system in place in San Diego? Get rid of the DROP program – immediately.

It is obvious that all our highly compensated city officials (elected and unelected) are hoping to jump on the DROP gravy train before they exit with their bloated pensions.

No City Council Representative will take this step because they and their “buds” are obviously planning a big meal from this trough.

Why not an initiative process to limit annual pensions to say 3 percent of a person’s total wages over the length of employment (the last year’s wage doesn’t dominate the calculation) and eliminate the DROP program?

The threat of such an initiative would get the scoundrels scurrying to clean up the mess.
