OK, a critical mass of readers have now chided me for the below post about Aguirre’s strange press release. I hadn’t realized it was in response – or some kind of follow-up – to this Don Bauder article in The Reader.

But if I thought Aguirre’s press release was weird, what about the U-T story today? Karin Winner’s quote in the bizarre article is interesting:

“We discovered Mr. Aguirre’s sealed divorce file in the normal course of reporting,” Winner said. “We take our responsibility as advocates for the public seriously, and that means when we come across sealed public records, we believe it’s important to find out why they were sealed and whether they were sealed for appropriate reasons.”

Again, Winner:

We might never have written about this had not Mr. Aguirre sent out yet another press release.

What is it about the press release that suddenly made it newsworthy? Aguirre’s made accusations before about the U-T that the paper didn’t acknowledge.
