George Stevens, who served as the City Council representative for District 4 from 1991 to 2002, has died, according to the district’s current representative.
The office of City Councilman Tony Young said today at the conclusion of a council meeting that Stevens had passed away this morning. The cause of his death was unknown.
Stevens, an ordained Baptist minister, left office in 2002 because of term limits. His former chief of staff, Charles Lewis, won office in 2002. Lewis was indicted on federal corruption charges in 2003 and died at age 37 in 2004.
Stevens, 74, reentered city politics following Lewis’ death, running to replace him in a special election. Stevens lost to Young in January 2005.
