A protest staged by anti-illegal immigration activists last weekend will end up costing taxpayers more than $7,120, said Boyd Long, a captain with the San Diego Police Department.

Long said that figure only accounts for the regular and overtime pay required to compensate the 22 police officers who spent last Saturday monitoring the group that gathered in Rancho Peñasquitos. The protestors hoped to draw attention to the migrants who live in canyons there.

The sum doesn’t include pay for Long or a lieutenant as well as fuel and other miscellaneous costs, Long said.
