Check out this great piece by Gene Wojciechowski on ESPN.com Wednesday. In “Veterans Committee throws it away — again” Wojciechowski sums up the sentiment of right-thinking baseball men about this week’s Hall of Fame voting fiasco.

The writer commiserates with new Padres radio man, Andy Masur — late of the Chicago Cubs broadcast booth — about Ron Santo’s missing out on Cooperstown, yet again.

And Santo was excruciatingly close this time, garnering 69.5 percent of the vote (75 percent is the required minimum), with equally deserving Gil Hodges and Joe Torre lagging behind. The Vets found a grand total of zero baseball players, executives and managers to be Hall-worthy in 2007, and have yet to elect a single soul since being reformed in 2003. Nice work, guys. At least you’re consistent.

Remember, glove conquers all.
