Mayor Jerry Sanders appointed longtime city employee Stacy LoMedico as the director of the city’s Park and Recreation Department, a post she has temporarily held since the departure of former Director Ted Medina.

LoMedico will lead a department that oversees more than 39,000 acres of city parkland and open space — including Balboa Park, Mission Bay Park and Mission Trails Regional Park — and 51 recreation centers. The agency also operates the Mount Hope Cemetery, 47 maintenance assessment districts, four skate parks and the golf courses at Torrey Pines, Mission Bay and Balboa Park.

LoMedico has been employed at the city of San Diego for more than 20 years, according to the Mayor’s Office. Her first day as the permanent director was Sunday.
