Ok, I just got off the phone with Steve Becvar, one of the head honchos in SDSU’s athletic department.
As you may have read below, a professor at SDSU is bringing forward a resolution to abolish the football program. The professor, Steven Barbone, doesn’t expect the university will actually get rid of Aztec Football, but he wants to bring the issue of athletic expenditures into the limelight.
Becvar said that his staff had discussed the resolution and decided it was not something they planned to spend much time worrying about at this point.
“Anyone can go forward and put a resolution into the process, but I guess as a staff, we’re so busy with other things — out of complete respect to the professor who brought forth the resolution — that concern our day-to-day operations that we have not spent a lot of time discussing it,” he said. “I don’t want that to sound like it’s not an important thing to discuss or not an important thing that needs to be addressed and looked at, but right now, we’re focused on our next home football game.”
He said he couldn’t immediately ascertain whether the program loses $3 million per year, as the resolution states, but said the department was careful with its finances.
“We’re very fiscally responsible and when things turn around for football we’ll hopefully show a better bottom line,” he said.
