Though the inside of the Julian Café is dark and quiet, outside is bustling with a steady stream of firefighters grabbing food.
Christy Connell, the co-owner, said she evacuated, only to come back so she could serve food to the firefighters.
“I had a freezer full of food that was going to go bad,” she said, noting that the power had been out since Monday morning. “I might as well cook it.”
Here in Julian, with the wind still in their favor, residents who did not evacuate said they felt confident the fire would stay away.
“As long as we’re all safe and the Lord’s got his hands on it, there’s no reason to worry,” Connell said. “This is routine for us.”
