With 20,217 unique homes that entered at least one stage of foreclosure in 2007, San Diego County ranked 26th among the top 100 metro areas in the nation for foreclosures, tracking firm RealtyTrac reported today.

The county had 1.816 homes in foreclosure per 100 homes — 158 percent higher than 2006.

But the county’s rate pales compared to the distress in Detroit, where 4.918 homes per 100 were affected by foreclosure. Second-ranked was Stockton, with 4.866 percent of its housing stock affected.

California had six of the top 20 metro areas for foreclosures per 100 homes.

I’ve requested the unique-address count broken down to ZIP level so we can update that foreclosures-by-ZIP feature you real estate nerds have been clamoring for.
