Thursday, March 13, 2008 | The governor’s proposed cuts to education are an opportunity for San Diego Unified (and other districts) to look at what they spend their money on, and first ask, “Should we do this?” The county government went through this exercise a few years ago, and for some activities their answer was “No.”

They then found another agency or private operation to assume the responsibility. I worked on one such privatization, and we ended up costing the taxpayers between 30 percent and 40 percent less.

Should the SDUSD own and operate a bus line? The obvious answer to me is no, they should not. There are many other examples of the district doing things they should contract out.
