So I heard back from Paul Levikow, spokesman for District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis. I have been trying to get a response from the DA’s Office since it was announced last Friday that Dumanis had endorsed Mayor Jerry Sanders’ run for reelection.
Dumanis had previously said she will only endorse in political races in “unusual circumstances.” Since then, she has endorsed in both the mayor’s race and the city attorney’s race. Dumanis’ endorsement of Jan Goldsmith for city attorney earlier this year precluded her from launching an investigation into incumbent City Attorney Mike Aguirre.
A statement Levikow sent me further explained Dumanis’ endorsement rules:
As I have said in the past, I will only endorse in races that have a direct impact on the public safety, including Sheriff, City Attorney, Superior Court Judge, Attorney General and Mayor because that office oversees the public safety of the city. I have not weighed in on the many other elected offices, despite requests for my endorsement.
