Friday, May 30, 2008 | Sorry to learn about Jess Durfee’s being voted off the Democratic Central Committee. Not surprising either. This is like a lottery.
Some historical tidbits here. Rita Luftic, wife of retired Judge Murry Luftic had served as Chair of the Democratic Central Committee for a number of years. And in fact, Rita had been my mentor when I first emerged into a political junkie during the McGovern campaign in 1972. Everyone I knew loved Rita. But in 1976, her name appeared at the bottom of this list of Central Committee candidates. She was number 13. And bumped off. Me? If memory serves me correctly, I was the second highest (central committee) vote getter that same year. Why? Well for starters, at least six people who voted for me knew who I was. The other approximately 13,000 votes that I received were from people who had never heard of me. BUT my name APPEARED number 2 on the ballot. That’s how this system works. In other words, it sucks!
And lastly (for the time being) I knew that Jerry Sanders would beat Steve Francis. Never had any doubt even had San Diego not received a clean bill of credit at zero hour. It’s called the YUCK factor. And Francis is Yucky big time!
