Monday, August 18, 2008 | Regarding the uproar over departing “public citizens” and the amounts of money awarded to them for their years of service, I think these people should get their six-figure “going away” gifts. However, rather than have taxpayers pay for it, I’d suggest that the panels voting for such high severance amounts chip in and provide it from their own pockets. That should solve the problem immediately. A gold watch would be nice.
Also, when one of our elected officials is charged with a crime related to their performance on the job, having been entrusted with the public’s confidence, I would suggest that all “public servants” (as opposed to taxpayers) be required to pay for and carry their own professional liability insurance. This is a good alternative to making taxpayers pay for insurance costs, and the subsequent court costs and legal fees that follow.
