The San Diego County Taxpayers Association has endorsed Proposition A, a ballot measure that would levy a $52-a-year parcel tax on most properties in the county to pay for increased fire protection.

John O’Neill, chairman of the group’s board, said the Taxpayers Association decided to back the measure because, although it’s not perfect, it’s necessary to properly protect the county.

“We need to get the money in place, given the extreme fire danger,” O’Neill said.

He said the association has not been asked to support the measure in public by campaigning for it.

Proponents of the proposition had been slow to gather momentum behind it, and the leading local firefighter unions haven’t supported it.
