More news of the schoobrary: An education consultant is informally talking with the San Diego Library Foundation about creating a nonprofit that would run a charter school in the downtown library.
Charters are public schools that are run independent of the school district. They are often structured as nonprofits, which gives them the ability to raise money. Scott Himelstein, director of the Center for Education Policy and Law at the University of San Diego and a former consultant to San Diego Unified on career technical education, said he had talked with the library foundation about the idea of a nonprofit, along with hashing out what its academic program would be and how the school would operate.
Himelstein said he couldn’t give additional details because the plans aren’t official. The plans would likely become formalized in the next 10 days, he said.
