I’ve been trying to make a habit of arriving early to all my assignments these days. It gives me time to scout locations, understand how the light is working and snap a few test photos.

On Wednesday afternoon, while waiting to photograph Harry Cooper Jr. for this weekend’s Q&A, I stood outside Southeast Community Presbyterian Church where he is a pastor, and aimed my camera at the cross. There was a bird perched atop it and I waited, and waited, and waited, until it finally took off, giving me the image I’d hoped to capture.
