It’s official: The San Diego teachers union has decided to endorse Republican political consultant Scott Barnett over longtime San Diego Unified school board member John de Beck for the June primary.

The choice is another sign of just how alienated de Beck is from the union — a sharp turn from de Beck’s roots in the teachers union when he was first elected.

Teachers didn’t endorse anyone in the race between incumbent Katherine Nakamura and challengers Kevin Beiser and Stephen Rosen. That’s something of a surprise because Beiser, a math teacher, has been favored by some Democratic groups specifically because he was seen as labor-friendly.

Union President Camille Zombro wasn’t available for comment tonight. The union board of directors recommended endorsing Barnett and no one for Nakamura’s seat earlier this week.
