Journalism won’t die if you donate. Support Voice of San Diego today!

So far, most of our Fact Checks have developed from reporters’ daily beat coverage and monitoring San Diego’s headlines. In the future, we encourage you to play a larger role in holding local officials accountable for their political spin, half-truths and outright lies.

In that spirit, we’re offering a one-time Fact Check contest to all voiceofsandiego.org readers. Whoever provides the best Fact Check idea will receive two complimentary tickets for a harbor tour through Hornblower Cruises & Events. The tickets, valued at $50 retail, may be exchanged for either the company’s Harbor Cruise & Sea Lion Adventure or its seasonal Whale & Dolphin Watching Adventure.

We’ll judge the best Fact Check tip based on the statement and the impact of proving it true or false. We encourage you to provide links or other information to help us both confirm the statement and evaluate its factual accuracy.

Here’s a sample contest entry, using a recent Fact Check post as an example:

Hello! My name is John Doe. I attended a San Ysidro candidates forum March 31, and David Alvarez said District 8 had the least amount of library square footage of any council district. I think that’s false. For one thing, the city opened a new library in Logan Heights back in December. It’s huge!

All contest entries, and any Fact Check tips in the future, can be sent by e-mail to factcheck@voiceofsandiego.org. Please include “fact check contest” in the subject line. If you wish to provide an anonymous tip, please say so.

The contest deadline is Wednesday, May 12. We’ll announce the winner Monday, May 17. If you have any questions about the contest, please do not hesitate to call me at 619.550.5668.
