My recent post containing City Council candidate Howard Wayne exclaiming his support for the Convention Center expansion stirred up some reaction.

When asked at the Downtown Partnership debate if he supports an expanded convention center, Wayne gave an emphatic, “No.”

But, in my post, he supported it and said it would stimulate tourism and generate revenue for local businesses.

So what’s the deal? I followed up with Wayne today and he said he will not support a plan that takes money from the city’s day-to-day operating budget and burdens the city with more debt. If the city can expand the convention center without doing either of these two things, then he’ll vote for it.

So until he sees that plan, he doesn’t support it. But he supports it once he does.
