The Issue

San Diego’s fire chief recently recommended the city cut $695,000 from the lifeguard division, including funding for two of the city’s four night lifeguards.

What It Means

Those cuts may not happen, though the city eliminated winter lifeguard patrols at Black’s Beach to help close an earlier budget gap.

The Bigger Picture

The proposed cutbacks would return nighttime lifeguard staffing to a level not seen since the 1990s.
