The Decision
Philanthropist Irwin Jacobs wanted the city to support him as he refines a plan to renovate one of Balboa Park’s central plazas. On Tuesday, the City Council gave him that support.
The Caveat
Council members made it clear that Tuesday’s vote would not require them to give Jacobs’ plan final approval, but instead encourage him to complete necessary studies that would help them make a final decision.
The Opponents
Preservationists and other opponents of the plan to change the park argued that the vote would give Jacobs’s proposal so much momentum the council will have to approve it in the future. They’re gearing up to continue fighting the plan in the months ahead and say it would irrevocably damage San Diego’s crown jewel.
