From the Reporter
What’s Happening
California is shutting thousands of children out of preschool to save money. Here in San Diego, many preschools are mothballing classrooms and turning away kids to survive.
Why I Chose This Story
Preschool seems to be the one thing almost everyone in the education world agrees on. Researchers have found that good preschools can have amazing effects long after children have grown up, including less crime, fewer dropouts and more success in school. It’s a major focus of the Obama administration.
Why It Works
Good preschools soak children in language that helps their brains develop and prepares them for school. They also teach skills like taking turns that equip kids to make better decisions.
