The Story |
School board member Shelia Jackson’s daughter works for a consulting company employed by the school district. Kendra Jackson has a district email address, a desk in its offices and reports to a district employee who oversees the construction management department. |
The Details |
Last summer, Shelia Jackson said the school district had already chosen the company before her daughter started working there. She assured a reporter that she would abstain if its contract came up.
Then in October, Shelia Jackson voted along with the rest of the school board to extend the company’s consulting contract, which included Kendra Jackson by name. |
The Rules |
Public officials are barred from entering into contracts that enrich their spouse or dependent children. That usually doesn’t include adult children.
However, Shelia Jackson may have a financial stake in what her daughter earns because she uses her apartment for business and sometimes stays there. |
The Back Story |
Last month, Shelia Jackson acknowledged financial problems had forced her to split time between her daughter’s Kearny Mesa apartment and a longtime educator’s Valencia Park home.
Both of the people that Shelia Jackson relied on have gotten work in San Diego Unified. And in both cases Jackson voted on giving them work or continuing to do so. |
