San Diego should dig into its pockets and donate the $32 million needed to get the library done. This will cost less than $25 per San Diegan.

Yes, city officials should not have started the project until they had confirmed they had the money. But it will not be good for San Diego if construction of the library is halted due to lack of funds. I know that this sum is no small amount for many in our city but it is not insurmountable if our better-off citizens contribute based on ability to pay.

The last thing San Diego needs is another embarrassment in the national media. If those who want to expand the Convention Center or build a new stadium for the Chargers ever expect public support they must first make sure the library gets built.

Mike Aguirre is the former city attorney of San Diego.
