Did you know that voiceofsandiego.org is a nonprofit news organization? Like PBS, we rely on member donations and other financial contributions to fund our public service. In other words, we rely on people like you.

Today, we are kicking off our Fall 2011 Member Drive. Our goal is to recruit 125 new members and raise $20,000 over the next month.

We average more than 180,000 visits to our site each month, thousands follow us on Twitter and Facebook and 6,690 subscribe to our Morning Report email. We’re thrilled to be sparking so much civic participation.

But we need your help. Only a small percentage of our current readers are also VOSD members — those who donate funding to fuel our efforts.

If you’ve come to rely on VOSD to provide you the in-depth analysis of local issues necessary to form educated opinions, please go one step further and become a member.

To put it in perspective, the leading candidates for San Diego mayor raised $1.1 million in the first three weeks of their campaign. We want to raise $20,000 in the next month to be able to provide the in-depth analysis you need to make sense of what they say.

Your funding will help us fact check campaign claims, analyze the candidates’ proposals and investigate their backgrounds. We’ll give you all the information necessary to make an informed decision at the polls.

Whether you can afford $10 or $1,000, please join our ranks by making your first donation today.

As a special “signing bonus,” you’ll receive a VIP invitation to our upcoming Brews & News event at a local brewery where you’ll be rubbing elbows with some of San Diego’s brightest minds.

When you become a VOSD member, you are doing more than making a financial contribution: You are joining a growing community of engaged citizens who want to make San Diego a better place.

Thank you for your investment.

Sincerely,

Scott Lewis
