It’s very sad to be part of a society that has so little compassion for homeless citizens. Having lived downtown for more than a decade now, the real issues are mental illness among the homeless and elected officials who are too often swayed by the “not my tax money” and “up by yer bootstraps” mindsets. Neither is useful in addressing this problem.

I perceive homelessness to be at its very worst downtown. (I am a native San Diegan.) It’s immoral that a city the size of this one can’t/won’t provide basic human services. It’s demeaning for the homeless and for everyone else, too. Shame on us.
