In the last weeks San Diego Gas and Electric power failures have occurred all over our region — Scripps Ranch, La Jolla, Lemon Grove, most recently in Mira Mesa. In every instance there have been hours and hours without electricity for homes, businesses and traffic signals. These blackouts happen day and night and take many hours before “service” is restored. It’s becoming a regular hassle.

But there’s no discount on my electricity bill. I hear only about rising costs to consumers who may have to bear the burden of SDG&E’s power lines having caused past backcountry wildfires. We know the San Onofre nuclear generating station is down and may never recover. Meanwhile, these mysterious and frequent SDG&E power failures are announced on the radio, and always with an SDG&E spin, telling only when electricity may be “restored.”

What’s going on? Can’t VOSD’s Rob Davis tell us?

Frances O’Neill Zimmerman lives in La Jolla.
