This was submitted as an idea to the Politifest 2012 Idea Tournament. VOSD members will vote on the best ideas and on Sept. 19 we’ll announce six contenders (Not a member? Join now to vote). At Politifest on Sept. 29, each of the six finalists will have five minutes to pitch their idea to a panel. The panel rates the ideas and two finalists advance. The crowd at Politifest will vote on a winner. The winner will receive an “idea-inspired” trophy custom-designed by former City Councilwoman Donna Frye. VOSD CEO Scott Lewis will also write about the winner’s idea.

Five hundred million for a Charger stadium? 8 to 12 games a year then motorcross and revival meetings? To revitalize downtown? Really?

How about spending half that amount making San Diego the outdoor sports capital of the United States? Invest in a true, 50- to 100-mile cycling circuit, venues for world-class soccer, track, other Olympic sports could make San Diego a training and qualifying center. Refurbish our beach facilities and host competitive triathlons. These are facilities that San Diego residents and tourists can use in between sporting events. We need a vision that capitalizes on San Diego’s natural strengths. In January, the only thing to do in Green Bay, Wisconsin is watch football; in San Diego we can do so much more.
