In the race for San Diego mayor, Republican City Councilman Carl DeMaio leads Democratic Rep. Bob Filner 50.95 percent to 49.05 percent with the 16.5 percent of the vote counted, according to the San Diego Registrar of Voters.

DeMaio’s lead is not a surprise at this stage. U-T San Diego’s Craig Gustafson has reported that larger numbers of Republicans turned in their ballot than Democrats. A very close contest is expected.

In the District 1 City Council race, Democratic incumbent Sherri Lightner leads Republican challenger 52.53 percent to Ray Ellis 47.47 percent with 15.2 percent reporting.
