Rhetorically toxic mailers and advertising now characterize election cycles across most segments of the political process. San Diego’s special mayoral race is no exception.

Voice of San Diego’s Scott Lewis and Andrew Keatts were joined on this week’s podcast by reporters Claire Trageser from KPBS and Joe Yerardi from inewsource to follow the attack ad money.

The Lincoln Club and labor unions’ efforts during phase 1 of the election cut deep. But now that their main target Nathan Fletcher is out of the running, how will they refocus on candidates Kevin Faulconer and David Alvarez ahead of the February runoff?

Keatts and Lewis also dug into the impact of the affordable housing fee increase. Turns out, it might not be a dissuading factor for businesses, but it also doesn’t look like it’ll have much of an effect on San Diego’s affordable housing crisis.

The Lincoln Club’s chief executive T.J. Zane and Richard Barrera of UnionYes were our two-headed Goat of the Week. Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder was named Hero of the week, though the U-T San Diego earned secondary hero status for their good-natured response to Vedder’s snarky barb at Thursday’s concert:
