Collection of political mailers

It’s Mailer Season! And we are reaching novel levels of creativity.

This week on the VOSD Podcast, hosts Scott Lewis, Jakob McWhinney and Will Huntsberry perform high-level media criticism — LOL — on recent political mailers and materials that employed new, subversive strategies.

From County Supervisor to the San Diego Mayor’s race, we have a new evolution of local politics playing out by mail. And billboard. And lawn sign.

One such method by Mayor Todd Gloria’s independent expenditure committee apparently seeks to boost a long-shot Republican candidate, Jane Glasson. Likewise, County Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer’s campaign is promoting brand synergy between former President Donald Trump and former Mayor Kevin Faulconer — her November opponent. In this episode, our crew discusses these messages and strategies ahead of the March 2024 primary. (Send your mailers to Lewis at scott@vosd.org.)

Plus: We recap more races ahead. San Diego City Council President Sean Elo-Rivera has an opponent who’s gaining some traction among local leaders, including perhaps City Attorney Mara Elliott.

Elliott’s seat is also opening. Elliott’s chief deputy, Heather Ferbert, is facing off against Assemblymember Brian Maienschein. Both candidates are collecting allies for the race to fill a job that has sewn discord at City Hall in recent years.

Distrust in D8

Some of the races could be influenced by flooding. Because in Southeast San Diego, many residents are still pissed.

January floods destroyed neighborhoods within San Diego’s District 8.

People are enraged over what they say has been years of neglect by the city. Huntsberry relayed what he heard from residents as he documented a potentially pivotal moment in San Diego history.

For now, Huntsberry says, those folks just want an apology from the city — to admit neglect — and for local leaders to do their jobs maintaining infrastructure and vegetation around their homes.

  1. San Diegans today cannot blame SESD leaders of the past for not taking care of conditions that lead to today’s awful flooding. As a 1960s Councilmember, I saw that we got all the funds and attention we could for needs we knew about. We do not learn of an emergency until Mother Nature tells us. Let’s support City Hall and see that no stone goes unturned in making things right.
