The March Primary seemed like a boring lemon but we’re going to squeeze some juice out of it.
The VOSD Podcast is not the place for your Biden-Trump angst or opinions of how “feisty” the State of the Union was. This is the place for commentary on the city attorney “vibes vote” and to drill down on second-place finishers in Council districts.
This week, hosts Scott Lewis, Andrea Lopez-Villafaña and Jakob McWhinney discuss the Primary results as they stood Thursday afternoon. (Get the Morning Report for our latest.)
Election Takeaways
Mayor Todd Gloria is slated to face police officer Larry Turner, who handily won second place over attorney Geneviéve Jones-Wright.
Every City Councilmember up for re-election sailed to a majority — except for Council President Sean Elo-Rivera. He’ll face Terry Hoskins, a retired police officer who’s well known in D9 neighborhoods.
Former Chula Vista City Councilmember Andrea Cardenas (who pleaded guilty to defrauding the federal government) initially put up some surprisingly high numbers. But she slid to fourth place in the race for her district since we recorded the show.
The most unnecessary vote ever — a vote between two San Diego city attorney candidates who will go to the runoff by default — served as an ego boost to Chief Deputy City Attorney Heather Ferbert who nabbed the majority.
And despite Governor Gavin Newsom’s big push for Proposition 1 (the mental health bond) it’s still on a razor’s edge.
Big Update on Big Money Lost
The city of San Diego overpaid by $6.7 million for a hotel to house the homeless.
The San Diego Housing Commission — which works with the City Council — bought a Mission Valley hotel during the pandemic. But it was purchased using a pre-pandemic assessment, which inflated the price.
That’s because a broker who managed that deal directed the assessment while making a side investment in the hotel’s parent company. He initially made big money off the deal.
An audit released this week confirmed the inflated price was due to the decision to appraise the hotel by its status before the pandemic hampered tourism and drove down hotel prices.
