That’s right folks, it’s election time. More than 1.9 million ballots are making their way to registered voters in San Diego County this week.

The campaign ads are running during your favorite shows and the mailers are getting spicy. (FYI our Scott Lewis is obsessed with mailers. If you get a good one, send him a pic on X.)

Our reporters are spending the next weeks covering local races, measures and propositions. We are especially focused on explaining and digging into the battles with the most at stake. Now, don’t get me wrong, every race is important, but some have higher stakes.

To keep up with all our election coverage, subscribe to the Morning Report, our daily news round up. You can do that here.

There’s nothing better than drinking some cafecito on a Sunday and watching the candidates for local races make their case to voters. 😉

If you missed our annual politics summit last month, you’re in luck. We published all the debates and discussions from Politifest on our site.

We hosted debates between the candidates running for city attorney, San Diego City Council districts 9 and 3, and San Diego Unified School District board. We also had discussions about propositions 5 and 36, and the proposed sales tax increase in San Diego.

You can visit the Politifest content hub here.

Once you’re done watching all the videos, grab another cafecito, this next story is big.

Bombshell Allegations Against Two Supes

Our Lisa Halverstadt broke the news last week that longtime county official Michael Vu is alleging that he was denied the county’s top executive job because of Supervisors Nora Vargas and Terra Lawson-Remer.

“He alleges that Vargas claimed he didn’t have the right racial background for the post and that Lawson-Remer sought to orchestrate the appointment of a Democratic strategist as his No. 2,” Halverstadt wrote.

If Vu’s name seems familiar, that’s because he’s been with the county for years. He served as the county’s registrar of voters and was promoted to assistant chief administrative officer in 2021. But as our Halverstadt reported in August, he was later demoted and took a $85,000 pay cut.

Vargas denied the allegations against her, and Lawson-Remer told Halverstadt that Vu is not the first “disgruntled employee” who filed a lawsuit because they didn’t get hired for a job. Vu’s claim is not a lawsuit, yet.
