This week was inauguration week in San Diego. Re-elected officials and new leaders gave big speeches on what they want to do in the coming year.

The meat and potatoes: Councilmember Raul Campillo let us know he’s going to put another sales tax measure on the 2026 ballot. He also threw a little bit of shade at Rep. Scott Peters (Peters is seen as a 2028 mayoral hopeful) hinting that Campillo plans to throw his hat in the ring.

Campillo criticized former city leaders for decisions that he says lead to the city’s budget woes and later became known as the pension scandal. Peters was on the City Council at the time. This was the opening shot.

This week on the VOSD Podcast, our hosts also unpack a speech from new Council President Joe LaCava where he addressed his take on the renewed push in La Jolla to separate from the city of San Diego.

He said he’s staying neutral on the topic.

Finally, our hosts get into the meat and potatoes of the show. They explain what a new county policy aims to do to limit collaboration with immigration enforcement agencies and why the Sheriff says she’s not on board.
