Darren Smith has been a mainstay of sports talk radio for many years in San Diego. He is known as one of the best interviewers in the region and I have enjoyed every one of my dozens of visits with him on his show.  

Now he’s looking for what’s next and I was excited to bring him to our studio.  

We went through some headlines, starting with San Diego’s new soccer team’s struggle with Mexican slang and slurs. San Diego FC will double its security and watch people’s faces to see if they join in any utterance of what the team says is a homophobic chant when the opposing team performs a goal kick. Our Andrea Lopez-Villafaña wrote a little history of the problematic Mexican soccer chant.  

We also broke down San Diego’s soaring water rates and discussed Councilmember Marni von Wilpert’s surprising suggestion that the city of San Diego should consider leaving the San Diego County Water Authority.  

We got through some other sports topics too: What to look for as SDFC continues its inaugural season. What’s the future of San Diego State football and how the Padres ownership situation may shake out.
