Tuesday, June 14, 2005 | Trustees for the San Diego Unified School District Monday voted 4-0, with Shelia Jackson abstaining, to reappoint Vince Riveroll as Gompers Middle School principal, effective May 31.
Riveroll, popular with students and parents, was reassigned suddenly and inexplicably by the SDUSD board of education on Feb. 8 to be an SDUSD mentor principal. The move outraged members of the community who saw in Riveroll a charismatic leader and champion for the children.
Gompers is located in Jackson’s sub-district, in Chollas View, and has been labeled an under-performing school for the past four years. Riveroll led the effort to transform Gompers into a charter school, in partnership with the University of California, San Diego. The school board’s 5-0 vote to approve Gompers’ charter petition on March 1 was a crowning achievement for the community.
