Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006 | About your editorial against the new library, I can only say I agree with you. When an organization is in deep financial trouble, it needs to stop the bleeding by prioritizing its expenditures. Much as a new main library would be a very desirable thing, it just doesn’t pass the priority test.
Besides, anything Jim Madaffer is pushing should get extra scrutiny, given his track record.
I share your concern about increased operating costs, because I saw the first proposal several years ago which showed a huge increase in central library staff. When I communicated this to Mayor Sanders, he had library chief Anna Tatar respond, and she sent me a detailed letter explaining why no new staff would be needed despite the much larger size. I simply don’t believe it would hold true.
