Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006 | Egads. Is this the ol’ boy network at work or what? First, we have the mayor saying he’s going to appoint that political appointee gypsy who’s attracted to six-figure salaries like a moth to a flame, none other than Alan Bersin, to the SDUPD Board. Now we have the Sheriff saying he’s going to nominate Bob Watkins, another neophyte (like Bersin) when it comes to airport management and, more importantly, who was the head hunter responsible for Alan Bersin getting the top slot at the SD Unified School District, to this same Board. Are Bersin and Watkins joined at the hip? Wonder what the two of them, who will comprise two of the three “executive” members of the SDUPD management committee, will conjure up for our future airport needs using that abundant airport authority cash flow? Is Watkins’ head hunting firm suffering from a dearth of revenues and so he now has the time for this ‘gig’ whilst the six-figure salary here will cushion the cash flow from his business? Do these appointments pass the smell test? Who will be asking the tough questions of these two before their appointments are engraved on stone tablets? Those are the questions crying out for answers.
