Who cuts your hair? Who delivers your newspaper? Who shoes your horses?

This month’s People at Work installment features “Miss Maria” Tinnin, who teaches kids to swim in exchange for time in the pool, which helps alleviate her arthritis pain.

The story came about because a reader e-mailed us and said her son’s swim teacher was “colorful” and “energetic, positive, but one tough cookie.”

Then she dropped the most intriguing part: “I heard she is also a Mardi Gras queen.”

All of that turned out to be true. I’m really thankful for the tips from readers like you who suggest good subjects. Once a month I spend a day with someone in San Diego in his or her job for our series, People at Work: A Monthly Look at the Things We Do for Money. We’ve been going just about every month since September 2006.

Have a good idea? Do you know an interesting person with an interesting job? Drop me a line: kelly.bennett@voiceofsandiego.org, or leave us a comment.

And if you’re just catching up on the People at Work series, some of the past stories are here.
